Terpenes are found all over nature. Anything in your kitchen that can be smelled such as herbs and spices, those are terpenes. Things like mint, thyme and basil. More that 50,000 terpenes have been identified in nature. The purest form to visualize terpenes is tree resin, if you have some of the resin on your hands it is very sticky and thick and does not wash off with soap and water and this is pure terpenes! More than 60% of the natural compounds or chemicals that have been identified in nature are terpenes. They are everywhere! If you google terpenes the first hits you will see will be from sites such as Leafly, Weedmaps and even a picture of a terpene wheel. This is because google bases its results on popularity. This leads to a misconception that terpenes are only found in cannabis, which is simply not true.

A terpene is natures simplest molecule. Isoprene are the building blocks used to create different terpenes, kind of like the Lego of nature. An Isoprene is made of five carbons and it has two double bonds. Beginner chemist lesson, double bonds love to connect to one another. Isoprene bond together to make monoterpene which is two isoprene bonded together; sesquiterpene is three; diterpene is four and this chain can continue for ever and ever. When you get enough isoprene together eventually you will have rubber which is a cool little fun fact! Some common terpenes that are made up of two isoprene are myrcene, limonene and menthol and humulene is made up of three isoprene.

There are only two terpenes that deserve special talk around cannabis. One is Beta-caryophyllene-epoxide, this is the terpene that drug hounds are trained to sniff out at airports or in police raids. The other is cannabis specific meaning it has not been found in any other plant and that is m-mentha-1,8(9)-dien-5-ol.

Terpenes are responsible for a lot of activity in the world around us. Terpenes are responsible for the smells in our perfumes; taste in our beer; vitamin A. Even the weather is affected by terpenes. Over large forests terpenes are evaporated from the vegetation, those evaporated terpenes then show up in the rainwater! They also have many medicinal properties. The medicinal value of a terpene is not strong and prominent however they are able to stabilize certain health conditions when consumed on a regular basis. Terpenes help cannabinoids absorb into our bodies, penetrate our blood brain barrier and modify our liver metabolism. Beta-caryophyllene causes black pepper to have its spicy taste. It also binds to the CB2 receptor, so it has a cannabinoid like effect although it is a terpene.

Dr. Ethan Russo, a cannabis scientist wrote a paper about the use of cannabis in different parts of the world. He noticed that cannabis use was deemed risky or toxic because it had side effects. These same cultures used plants and medicines as antidotes. Common antidotes seem to be related to terpene content. In lemons you see limonene, this help ease anxious feelings. Myrcene is used to help sedate if the user gets hyper while using cannabis. Ironically the terpenes used as an antidote are often built into certain cannabis varieties. This is where you can use the plants terpene profile to select the right oil for your health needs.

It is worth it to know why terpenes derived from the cannabis plant are so valuable. When terpenes derived from botanicals are added to oils the genetic makeup of the plant is depleted. The entourage effect is better achieved when the genetic makeup of the plants natural profile is retained in the extracted oil. Capturing terpenes from cannabis means we are pulling the entire plant profile; this will help in achieving the full entourage effect and cannabis flavor. Cannabis derived terpenes are the top choice for consumers.

Post Workout Routine to Include CBD

A post-workout routine is just as important as the workout itself. Workouts leave us with a multitude of sensations some of which include exhaustion, soreness and a sense of accomplishment. The stress we put our bodies under when we workout causes microscopic tears in our muscles. Tiny tears that trigger inflammation, causing our muscles to feel achy and fatigued. This stress on our bodies is healthy for us in the long run, when the damage heals it will be stronger than before. For most, a good post workout routine includes lots of sleep, hydration and eating proteins. All of which will aid in repairing our muscles tissue.

Cortisol is a hormone that regulates a variety of processes that naturally occur within our bodies. Processes that include metabolism regulation and immune response as well as enabling the body to properly respond to stress. However, in this response to stress, cortisol reduces protein synthesis and will prevent the growth of new tissue. It seems to prolong the length of recovery instead of aiding our bodies to health. It has been found that CBD decreased cortisol levels. Ingesting CBD oil post workout will disable the body’s natural release of cortisol which will allow protein synthesis and muscle regeneration.

“According to a 2018 review of 132 original studies published in Frontiers in Neurology, CBD can indeed reduce inflammation in the body and help improve pain and mobility in patients with multiple sclerosis. “It is anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, antiemetic, antipsychotic, and neuroprotective,” the review study’s authors wrote”

“When muscles rub against each other during workouts or training, a condition known as Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness triggered. From the tearing and swelling of the muscles continues, you feel fatigue and next is inflammation from the damaged mucles. When muscles are damaged, the inflmation moves blood to the area being benefical but on the other hand until inflammation is eased will healing begin, CBD hemp oil becomes helpful to reduce the inflammation”

This study also indicated sedative effects meaning the CBD will aid in a more natural state of rest. Rest is one of the most crucial elements for recovery. When your body is at rest you are unknowingly repairing tissues and growing muscles. Reaching the rapid eye movement cycle in sleep or REM cycle assures optimal conditions for muscle building and repair. Another study has shown that when CBD is consumed we experience REM sleep better than if it is not. Sleep is influenced by our 5HT Serotonin receptor. CBD has shown to improve the function of these receptors resulting in better sleep!

So what is the best delivery method for your fast recovery? Thats for your body to decide and you to learn what helps you best. We belive stirking the issue at hand from different angles could help you so consider multiple delivery methods such as topical applications and internal.

Have you ever considered adding CBD to your post workout routine? If yes, have you had positive trials that make you believe it has been a good choice for you? If No, what is holding you back? Skepticism is common to new users of cannabinoids and for valid reasons. Cannabinoids, CBD alike, is a rather new f and there is little science behind its validity. There have been several studies showing its benefits and a simple “Hey, have you tried CBD?” to a fellow gym buddy will lead you into interesting conversations if not a success story or two.

CBD has been know to cause adverse reactions when mixed with some prescription drugs. Make sure you are consulting with a doctor, physician or pharmacist when adding CBD to your regimen.

Hype for CBD

Hemp has been used for centuries for its strong fibers as a fabric and hemp hearts have been used as protein, but the extracted oil from hemp, CBD, is a rather new adoption of the hemp plant.

Everywhere you look you see CBD in health supplements and beauty products, pet health and wellness products, even household cleaning supplies. There is a lot of curiosity around the CBD hype, but before you decide to implement a CBD regimen to your routine you need to make sure you are doing your homework on the products you are selecting. It is expensive and time consuming to improve your health, so when making a change it is imperative that you do your homework on the source of your CBD.

Once you have initiated exploring CBD you will be interested to learn more about our all-star hemp plant. Soil Friends Farms grows our hemp with the most loving hands along with the purest resources. We practice responsible farming on our family farm. We invite you to visit us during the coming season! CBD products and their benefits will speak for themselves when you choose an oil made from high quality hemp. The chemical properties of CBD work in synch with the Endocannabinoid System within our bodies. As a recap hemp is part of the cannabis family and hemp contains phytocannabinoids. ‘Phyto’ means plant and ‘endo’ means within. The phytocannabinoids found in the hemp plant work with our bodies endocannabinoid system to achieve a state of homeostasis. You can read more into this topic in our blog on smokable hemp here. Our bodies ECS (Endocannabinoid System) is not quick to adapt to change so make sure that you are sticking with your new regiment for 30-60 days before deciding CBD isn’t for you or changing your dose or routine.

Consuming CBD for the first time does come with a learning curve. You want to be aware of the shift in your system and small and simple is a good way to start. Not knowing what to expect can be scary but easing your mind and body into a new CBD routine will make it an easy transition.  CBD oil is typically seen as safe but a quick google search about CBD horror stories will make it easy to see why knowing your CBD manufacturer is critically important. Finish Strong

On January 14th I went to a seminar held by the Michigan Agri-Business Association in Grand Rapids, Michigan called “Hemp, Marijuana and you…Oh My!” This seminar was several hours long, and we discussed important topics including the State of Michigan’s Industrial Hemp program. During a presentation made by Gina Alessandri farmers expressed a lot of concern around the problems that can occur when choosing to plant such a high-stake crop.

Hemp has a natural association with risk for a multitude of reasons, but a lot of this risk can be eliminated with the help of a knowledgeable company like Michigan Hemp Solutions. We are here to help you have a successful year. We want to help you select the best genetics for your land, help you raise your crop and assist you after harvest by offering processing services.

Your success starts with the genetics you choose to plant. Trilogene Seeds is composed of a team with award-wining breeders, cultivators and growers. They have perfected genetics that have over 99% germination rates as well as 99% feminized seeds. The female hemp flower is sought out because all the medical value is housed there. Michigan Hemp Solutions will assist you in selecting the right genetic for you. As a certified Trilogene Seed consultant we have the team to help you make the best choice for you and your land.

The next key to success for your hemp crop lays in using biostimulants to get a better yield.  The rhizosphere plays a key role in the development of the plant due to a relationship between the root and micro-organisms that surround the root. Adding biostimulants to your soil will enhance this network and aid hemp roots in obtaining the needed nutrients from the surrounding land. Think of biostimulants as a multivitamin for your plants. Biostimulants increase the manufacturing of different compounds that protect the crop from stress and disease resulting in healthier vegetation which leads to a better photosynthesis process. Using biostimulants will allow you to use a natural and chemical-free method of strengthening vegetation and aiding recovery in stressful situations as well as being regenerating once poor soils, into healthy lively soils filled with nutritional value.

A good genetic, help with the correct nutrients and with a little bit of luck in the form of good weather you will have a successful harvest. But what do you do after you harvest the crop you spent all summer raising? Drying and storing hemp in the right conditions is crucial and Michigan Hemp Solutions has the facilities available to offer our farmers a stress-free solution. We offer services that turn hemp into pellets by way of hammermilling the crop and encasing it into a hard shell. This aids in the preservation of CBD and makes transporting and extraction simple. We also offer the service of processing your harvest into high-quality CO2 Extracted oil. You can read our article about that here.

After you put in your investment and work all season long doing everything you could to win, we are here to help you finish strong by handling your crop with our experience like it’s our own.

Contact us today, schedule your consultation on a first come first serve basis. Send us a message via the contact page or send emails to – We look forward to hearing from you!

Looking forward to following up with you all after the @ihempmichigan expo! Our turn-key services providing farmers with seeds, plants, nutrients & biostimulants through processing will put some top-notch extracts in the market for 2020

Cultivation is Key For My CBD

Happy New Year! We hope that you all had a wonderful holiday season.

I am a mom of two and one of my children depended on cannabis as a therapy daily for many years. My daughter, Nattaly, was diagnosed with cancer at the age of four. She went in and out of treatment three times and during her second round of chemotherapy, we chose to use cannabinoids, mainly CBD and THC, to help ease the side effects she was experiencing due to her treatment. The question I kept finding myself asking was “where does this medicine come from?” Michigan is a legal state and there are policies in place so that provisioning centers are supplying patients with clean medicine that must be tested before it is sold so I knew her medicine was clean and safe for consumption but I had this urgency to know who handcrafted this plant for her.

I was never told the name of the farmer to thank or the field that cultivated a plant that made her quality of life exponentially better. Someone took the time to mature a plant to help her and I will never know who that was. This unanswered question left me with a desire to cultivate and produce medicine so that I could tell patients where their medicine came from and whose hands crafted it. Ben is our farmer at Michigan Hemp Solutions, and he is cultivating CBD for patients like you and those you love. He is also taking the time to teach others this trade so that high-quality products will continue to be produced for patients like Nattaly.

Michigan Hemp Solutions cultivates hemp with a high CBD profile on a family farm in Galesburg Michigan. The CO2 extracted CBD oil produced is also manufactured in Galesburg. It is important to us that you know where your cannabinoids are cultivated because that makes all the difference in quality. I have had a lot of people come to me over the last five years and ask me what the best CBD product was and where they could purchase it. I was never able to confidently answer that question until I met Ben. When I heard about Ben & Sarah’s farm and what they were trying to accomplish with the hemp fields, I was captivated. They are farmers who have the consumer’s best interest in mind and their hearts are all the way into the product that is being produced. Soil Friends Farms, where our hemp is cultivated, has been chemical and pesticide-free for 7 years. I have finally found a product that is cultivated locally, and I can confidently recommend this line of CBD to anyone who asks.

The quality of your CBD starts in the plant’s growth with a cannabinoid known as cannabigerolic acid or CBGA. This is the molecule that all other cannabinoids are built upon. Each cannabinoids structure is different, and those different structures bind to docking sites within our body’s cells causing the cell to change shape. This shape change causes the cells receptors to make a neurotransmitter. This change caused by the fusion of cell and cannabinoid will create an event within the body. For example, the vanilloid receptor is responsible for pain, inflammation and body temperature. Once the cell that has bonded with a cannabinoid has landed on the receptor signals are blocked. This is the same reaction that is produced when you take Tylenol for a headache. Hemp farmers could also be called trichome farmers, we raise our hemp for the trichomes that it produces once it matures. This is where all the medical value of the plant is housed. We at Michigan Hemp Solutions take pride in the quality of our product knowing it is your family we will be taking care of. This is the same reason Soil Friends Farms has not used chemicals or pesticides on fruit or vegetable crops. The quality of the plant starts with the field and hands used to raise it.

Smokable Hemp

If you are new to our Blog, Welcome! We are Michigan Hemp Solutions and it is our goal to educate and inform on a variety of hemp uses and practices. In our last post we talked about carbon dioxide (CO2) extraction systems and the reasons we chose CO2 for our extraction solvent. CO2 extraction takes our high-quality hemp flower full of Cannabidiol (CBD) and turns it into a medical grade oil.

The consumption method must meet the need of the consumer and we are lucky that there are many methods to choose from. To name a few we have oils, vaporizers, tinctures and patches. But there is little discussion around smoking the flower from a hemp plant. We want to offer you information on why this consumption method may work for you.

It is still illegal to add CBD to liquids and foods and it is not approved as a dietary supplement by the FDA, yet as 2020 approaches the acceptance of cannabis has come farther than it ever has in America. It is understandable that consumers are being cautious of the products they are purchasing and consuming. The strains produced on our farm meet state standards meaning there is less than 0.3% of Tetrahydrocannabinol (delta-9 THC) on a dry weight basis. Michigan also tests our harvest for foreign matter, pesticides, chemical residue, metals, CBD and CBD acid levels, fungicides, insecticides, residual solvent levels, moisture content and a terpene analysis.

Delta-9 THC is known for its ability to cause psychoactive effects in the brain. It is a misleading fact that CBD is a non-psychoactive component of the cannabis plant. The term psychoactive refers to the effect caused by a chemical reaction in your brain. CBD does cause a chemical reaction making it a psychoactive drug, however to redefine this conception we can think of THC as intoxicating and CBD and non-intoxicating. Cannabis is processed through your Endocannabinoid system (ECS). The Endocannabinoid system is found in many different species but we will just focus on how it effects humans. Your ECS is compiled of a group of receptors found throughout your body. These receptors are in the central nervous system, the peripheral nervous system and within the immune system. The receptors control and regulate our metabolic functions that are used to maintain homeostasis. In other words, our ECS is used to balance systems within our bodies that are otherwise imbalanced causing us to feel ill or uncomfortable. If we can get our bodies to reach a state of homeostasis it means all the systems in our bodies are working in harmony to maintain optimum conditions. Our ECS is important in regulating essential functions such as sleep, appetite, pain, fertility, and immune system functions to name a few. Although CBD is not intoxicating it has been reported to make the consumer feel relaxed, sleepy, at ease or generally just a little bit happier. CBD has also been noted to provide quick relief from nausea and pain.

Inhalation is one of the most practical ways for users to get cannabis, in this case in the from of CBD, into their body’s Endocannabinoid System. Inhalation is also one of the fastest delivery methods. Inhaling CBD allows for direct contact with your lungs alveoli, which then transfers the cannabinoid into your blood stream. When inhaling CBD the onset usually occurs within five minutes and can remain in your system for up to two hours. Inhalation is also the cheapest way to experience hemp flower. Inhalation can be achieved with a variety of methods such as a pre-rolled cone or by using a dry herb vaporizer. Smokable hemp allows the consumer for a fast and effective short term relief. Our farm produces three strains of hemp each with its own unique properties. Sour Berry is a strain that is best used during the day. Our Sour Berry tests at 8.5% CBD and is bursting with fruity terpenes giving a boost of energy to any user. Boax tested at 7.6% CBD and is a great strain to smoke at night after a hard day, it has properties that highlight relaxation and heightening a feeling of accomplishment. Low and slow drying preserved the flavor and terpenes to help contain CBG, CBN, CBC, Caryophyllene, Humulene, Limonene, Linalool, Pinene and a host of vitamins, minerals and essential amino acids. This strain has flavor of sweet earthy herbs and smooth smoke. Boax Spectrum is very similar to Boax but has a minty flavor. This strain tests at 8.4% CBD and is used like that of Boax, it is perfect for the end of the day or on a relaxing Saturday morning. All our strains are grown on land free of chemicals and pesticides. We farm with quality in mind in hopes that we are providing you with the best agriculture products on the market.

Cannabis CO2 Extraction

Michigan Hemp Solutions is here to provide our clients with a variety of products based on the needs that you present us with. We want to provide you with clean cannabis extracts with consistency. Using CO2 Extraction allows for us to provide an array of products. We pride ourselves on being able to meet the demands of our clients and being a sustainable business conscience to our earth. Concentrate sales are now higher than the sale of dry flower because the plant profile is preserved, and the dosage is more suitable to the consumer’s needs.

Our CO2 extraction process allows us to select specific cannabinoids to deliver to our clients based on their needs. Our CO2 system can adapt to client needs by adjusting perameters for different cannabis extracted products. System changes include adjusting pressure, temperature, and flow rate to manipulate the super critical fluid within the system. As our client’s needs shift so can our production, CO2 allows us to be precise on the compounds we select to extract, and this is a key benefit to our business. There are many other extraction methods available to the industry that are great at making one product. We pride ourselves on being a company that produces full spectrum cannabis oils.

CO2 readily evaporates from the oil leaving no residue once the oil reaches atmospheric conditions. CO2’s evaporation and terpene preservation leads to a natural tasting product and a golden color oil. Running supercritical or liquid CO2 (subcritical) through raw material also kills most microbial contaminants. Ultimately CO2’s ability to be fluid and ever changing allows us to stay ahead of the markets needs by meeting your need for broad-spectrum, green and clean oil!

Full Spectrum CBD Oil

CO2 extraction is ideal for cannabis as well as food, pharmaceutical, and fragrance industries due to its ability to process in a delicate manor. Settings such as temperature, and pressure ensures that we will not damage frail trichomes when performed correctly. Cannabis concentrates are targeted for an assortment of cannabinoids, terpenes and other components of the dried cannabis plant. Our goal at MHS is to be consistent and efficent in achieving therapeutic results. Current studies have suggested that extracting terpenes can enhance the medicinal effects of CBD along with other cannabinoids. The proper extraction of terpenes from specific strains allows us to satisfy medicinal market demands. If you cultivated a variety based on the medicinal value of that plant we are able to preserve and prevent those terpenes from getting lost in the extraction method. Consumers will be able to measure the quality based on effects upon consumption.

Cannabis can be extracted using several different methods aside from CO2 extraction. Butane and Ethanol are the two mentioned and are of the most popular. They have a commonplace in the cannabis industry for multiple reasons, one being the strength of the solution. Ethanol and Butane are powerful solvents that have an all or nothing personality. They pull out wax, chlorophyll, fat, terpenes and cannabinoids. This leaves no room for control on what is targeted for extraction.

Cannabinoids like tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD) are two of the main compounds extracted from the cannabis plant. Aren’t these the most important two? But what about terpenes? How do terpenes play a role in extraction and why are they so crucial? Terpenes are responsible for most of the plants profile. Another way to look at terpenes is considering them like the plant’s personality traits. Before I mentioned that you may cultivate certain strains because of their medicinal profile, this profile comes from the terpenes housed in the flowers trichomes. These same trichomes house CBD and THC as well.

We deliver a ‘full-spectrum’ extract meaning the complete profile of the plants medicinal value which includes both terpenes and cannabinoids. Through extraction the cannabinoids are preserved but as well as the delicate terpenes that are volatile through the extraction process. With CO2 extraction the delicacy of the process allows for the consumer to receive that full-spectrum oil they may be in search of.

By changing the pressure and temperature of the CO2 you can create Supercritical CO2 or CO2 in its liquid state (subcritical). Due to CO2’s properties it can be described as a “green” solvent because it is both non-toxic and non-flammable. This alleviates the concern for residue in the final product and the chance of explosion during processing. Carbon Dioxide is generally recognized as safe by the FDA. The legislation around health and safety places heavy restrictions around solvent that are acceptable. CO2 is most acceptable because it is natural. Extracts made from CO2 are closest to the natural starting material which is our goal in extraction.

The liquid CO2 is pumped through the plant material dissolving the terpenes and oils. After this process is complete the CO2 returns to its natural state as a gas allowing the terpenes and oils to flow out for collection. Once the terpenes are collected, we can run the process again this time at a higher temperature and pressure specifically targeting cannabinoids. Once the cannabinoids have been extracted, they can be winterized to remove fats, then the terpenes from the first extraction can be added back into the product creating a full-spectrum oil.

CO2 extraction is both customizable and clean. CO2 extraction allows for us to extract any desired compound(s) to create therapeutic CBD-based medicine that is valuable in terpenes, aroma, and quality. We truly believe that with our CO2 extraction system we can meet a limitless variety of products for you and the consumer you are targeting.

Terpenes are a large part of the full-spectrum oil that we are trying to achieve but you may be asking why terpenes are so crucial to the medicinal user of cannabis products. Terpenes are essential oils that work with cannabinoids to create the entourage effect. The entourage effect is simply the way the whole cannabis plant including cannabinoids, flavonoids, terpenes and other substances naturally found in cannabis work together to create homeostasis in your body. Terpenes also have a large number of medicinal benefits!

Studies have been conducted over the years and it has been found that any terpene concentration above 0.5% is considered to effectively change behavior and bring out physiological changes. Patients who showed symptoms of depression were exposed to terpenes and nine out of the twelve patients reported that their depression subsided. There are over 200 terpenes in the cannabis plant resulting in a different aromatic flavor for each plant profile. Terpenes are also found in a grand host of other plants such as hops, lemongrass, thyme and citrus fruits just to name a few. There is a terpene wheel that displays where certain terpenes are found and the aroma and flavor profile! Although the cannabis plant has 200 terpenes there are more than 30,000 known terpenes. If you are curious, check out the wheel. Terpenes health benefits also deserve a mention. Studies conducted in the last five to ten years have proved that the terpene Limonene stunt cancer cell growth, prevents the cells from spreading and often causes the cancerous cells to die. The terpene Linalool or a dominant terpene found in lavender is known for its anticonvulsant properties, or in other terms has been found to stop seizure activity in the brain. There is so much more and beyond to talk about terpenes!
